The Executive Director of Girls To Lead Africa Honest Kansiime Mugisha has urged girls not to fear taking up leadership positions while still in school.
She noted that the role they play while at school prepares them to become future policy makers.
Ms Mugisha made the remarks on Feb 14th 2020 while officiating at one day training for selected girl leaders from secondary schools, teachers, and Police officers held at Rovins Hotel in Kihihi Town Council Kanungu district.
She noted that quite often girls are subdued in taking up top leadership positions because they are not mentored to do so and they end up playing assistant positions yet they are also able to be at the top of leadership.
“Our organization is aiming at developing, nurturing and prepare young women to take up leadership roles in their communities,” She said.
The training was also aiming at equipping girl child on aspects of self protection and empowering her to get confidence to report to authorities the people who abuse her rights, according to Ms Mugisha.
Kanungu District Deputy RDC Emmy Ngabirano said that such training has awakened the girls’ consciousness and built their self esteem thus they are now able to confront human rights abusers.

He asked the Police to continue sensitizing the masses on how they handle juvenile cases especially those affecting the girls so that they can continue to get confidence to report such cases.
Ngabirano thanked the founders of Girls To Lead Africa who have come up with training of girl child on how they can keep themselves in school until they get life skills and how they can get and maintain leadership positions both in school and out of school.

A strange disease has attacked bananas in Rwampara district sending farmers into panic.
The disease affects the color of the banana fingers and bunches from green to brown or black, according to one of the affected farmers Nestori Aturinda.
He says that the disease eventually results in premature ripening and shrinking of the bananas, yet even when cooked, they remain hard and inedible.
Kigaaga Parish Chairperson Francis Turyaheebwa says that symptoms of the new disease are different from the usual Banana bacterial wilt and inset bacterial wilt, also known as false banana.
He says that the outbreak has already affected their incomes as more and more bananas, a major source of income for the community, are rotting in the plantations.
Alexander Baabo, the chairperson LC I Kigaaga Village says the disease was first heard in districts deep in Isingiro district and it had spread to their area in less than one and a half years.
Mwesigwa Kyomukama Jotham, an area politician and farmer, blames the outbreak on laxity by agricultural officers and extension workers.
He says that no one has been seen either monitoring or sensitizing farmers on the disease.
A similar disease was earlier on reported in Ntungamo district.

Masindi high court resident Judge Justice, Paul Wolimbwa Gadenya, has quashed the suspension of William Mwambu the district male councilor for persons with disabilities who had been suspended by the district council speaker Moses Kirya on the 19th of December 2019.
Mwambu dragged Masindi district local government and Kirya to Masindi high court on the 6th of February 2020 through Counsel Yefusa Ochieng from Legal Action for Persons with Disabilities (LAPD) following his continued dismissal from Masindi district council by Moses Kirya the district council speaker.
Moses Kirya the district speaker had suspended Mwambu for three times in two years. He first suspended him in May last year on grounds that he had failed to produce social services report, he was also suspended in September last year and in January this year because of misconduct during council proceedings.
According to Mwambu, he wanted court to quash the decision of 6th January 2019 where he was suspended for two council sittings, he also wanted court to allow him continue attending council sittings with immediate effect and also wanted court to compel the two parties to pay his allowances together with that of his guide.
When the case came up today before the judge, he advised the parties involved to agree and enter a consent judgment to save time and government resources and the parties concurred with him.
Masindi district local government was represented by Joseph Nyeko from the Attorney General’s office while William Mwambu was represented by Philip Kasule from Legal Action for Persons with Disabilities (LAPD).
According to Kasule the parties agreed that the suspension of Mwambu by the district council speaker be lifted with immediate effect. They also resolved that Mwambu be paid his sitting allowance for the council attended on the 19th December 2019.
It was also resolved that Mwambu’s aid be paid allowances for the council sitting of May 30th 2o19, 5th September 2019 and 19th December 2019.
The judge also awarded William Mwambu costs of 500.000 Uganda shillings.
Commenting on the judgement Mwambu noted that he was satisfied with the ruling but warned the speaker not repeat the same mistake saying that next time he will not accept to enter a consent judgment.
Reacting on the same matter Richard Kiiza the principal private secretary to the CAO who at the same time represented Masindi district local government welcomed the judgment saying that it was fair to them.
According to the parties which attended the consent meeting, Moses Kirya came after the consent judgment had been entered.
Efforts to get a comment from Kirya were futile since he never responded to our repeated calls.

The students said they did not support the suspension of Emmanuel Twesigomwe by staff who accused him of leading other students in bullying and teasing the senior one and senior five students.
According to one of the senior one students, they were forced to pay shs 3000 in order to escape teasing; those who failed were subjected to severe beatings every night.
Today, the school administration decided to send Twesigomwe home and advised him to come with a parent after he was implicated for assaulting a senior five student identified as Kato Premier.
However, this angered other students who turned violent and started pelting stones at teachers. It is alleged that they had even planned to burn the head teacher’s house.
Police under the command of Muhammad Kyewalyanga, the head of operations at Kabale police station and Henry Kisembo, the Field Force Unit commander used teargas and live bullets to disperse the rowdy students.
John Robert Osula, the school head teacher assured parents that the school administration is investigating more of this matter to make sure that all the culprits are dealt with accordingly.
By press time, the situation at the school was already calm.
