Traders in Kabale Municipality have called on President Yoweri Museveni to prioritize the district for industrial development and economic support, citing a growing list of financial challenges affecting local businesses.
The appeal was made on Tuesday April 29, 2025 during a consultative meeting organized by the Uganda National Traders Alliance (UNATA) at Kirigime Guest House in the southern division of Kabale municipality. The forum, part of a nationwide tour to gather traders’ views for submission to the President, brought together dozens of local business owners and leaders.
Michael Turyamureba Byamungu, Chairperson of the Kabale Municipality Traders’ Association (KMTA), led the call for the establishment of an industrial park in the district. He emphasized that such a development would spur local manufacturing, create jobs, and strengthen Kabale’s economic role within the Kigezi sub-region.
He noted that Traders in Kabale have long contributed to the regional economy through retail and wholesale businesses. However, they must now diversify into manufacturing if they want to grow profits and stimulate real economic progress. He urged the government to support local entrepreneurs with access to startup capital, equipment, and skilled labor.
Godfrey Katongole, President of UNATA, said the traders’ concerns reflect the critical need for the ongoing consultative meetings across the country. He emphasized that the ongoing consultations are intended to identify pressing issues, which will be documented after the meetings.
He noted that these engagements are essential and give traders a platform to voice their challenges and propose solutions encouraging all businesspeople to join trader associations for collective advocacy. He assured traders that their concerns would be presented directly to the President.
Kabale was initially among 25 districts earmarked for industrial park development under President Museveni’s 2021 economic plan. However, with recent government focus shifting to Kisoro District, hopes for such a facility in Kabale have dimmed.
