The Masindi Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Darius Nandinda has challenged Uganda revenue authority (URA) to improve it’s relationship with tax payers if it’s to achieve it’s tax collection goals.

Nandinda made these remarks during Baraza meeting organised by URA held at Masindi Kolping Hotel within Masindi town on Tuesday.

The meeting aimed at identifying issues faced by business owners in regard to tax payments so as to find lasting solution to them.

Nandinda noted that much as URA has task of collecting taxes in the country, there is need to ensure that the tax payers are sensitized on importance of paying taxes.

He added that failure by URA to sensitize tax payers on the importance of paying taxes had led to reduction in tax collection and also some have hated the ruling government because of being told to pay taxes.

Some of the business owners who attended the meeting decried what they termed as over taxation that has forced some people to quit their businesses.

They also questioned the criteria URA uses in determining the taxes levied on their businesses especially those in corridors and on streets.

They requested URA to always get their opinion before levying taxes on their businesses.

While responding to above concerns, Ekabukwe URA supervisor who doubles as communications officer blamed most of the business operators in Masindi district for failure to keep record of their daily sales and to declare their business capital to URA which gives them full rights to determine the tax to be levied on such businesses.
