The Prime Minister of the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom (BKK), Owek Andrew Byakutaga Ateenyi, has officially announced that the Kingdom will celebrate the 31st Coronation Anniversary of His Royal Majesty Omukama Dr. Solomon Gafabusa Iguru I on June 11, 2025.
The main celebrations will be held at the BKK Parliamentary Gardens under the theme: “Embracing Unity in Diversity for the Preservation of Our Culture and Heritage.”
While addressing journalists from his office, Owek Byakutaga outlined some of the confirmed pre-Empango activities that will precede the grand coronation event. These include: Empango Golf Tournament scheduled for May 31, 2025 in Masindi and it is organized in partnership with Kinyara Sugar Ltd and Masindi Golf Club.
Empango Exhibition, a cultural exhibition showcasing Bunyoro’s heritage, crafts, and innovations will run from May 30 to June 11, 2025 at the Hoima Booma Grounds.
Also Empango Run is set to take place on June 7, 2025 at the Rukurato Gardens aiming at raising funds for the purchase of a cancer screening machine (Colposcope) for Hoima Regional Referral Hospital.
Thanksgiving service to be held on June 10, 2025 at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Duhaga, to celebrate the life and reign of the Omukama and Omujaato/Akasiki – Scheduled for June 10, 2025 in Masindi, highlighting the kingdom’s rich traditional customs.
Finally official Coronation Anniversary Celebrations will be held on June 11, 2025 at the Rukurato Gardens.
Additional events including Omugo Health Camp and a Cultural Food Festival will be confirmed pending final approval.
During the briefing, the Prime Minister also reflected on the Omukama Gafabusa’s 31-year reign, highlighting numerous achievements made amidst various challenges. He praised Omukama’s leadership, noting that it has fostered cultural revival, unity, and development within the kingdom.
Owek Byakutaga concluded by calling on all Banyoro and well-wishers to actively participate in and support the coronation and pre-Empango events, emphasizing their importance in preserving Bunyoro-Kitara’s identity and cultural heritage.
