President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has paid tribute to the late Maj. John Bashaija Kazoora, hailing him as a patriotic hero whose dedication contributed significantly to Uganda’s liberation struggle.

In a speech delivered by Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa during the burial ceremony held in Bwizibwera-Rutooma town council, Mbarara District on Thursday, President Museveni described Maj. Kazoora as a committed fighter whose choice to join the struggle against bad leadership was a testament to his bravery and love for the country.

Museveni noted that although Kazoora later distanced himself from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and joined the opposition, they maintained communication. He emphasized the importance of dialogue, even among political adversaries.

“In life, it is normal to disagree. But that should not stop us from talking to each other,” Museveni said. “If you don’t talk to those you disagree with, how will you convince them to join your side?”

The late Maj. Kazoora, who died on Easter Sunday at the age of 67 after a long battle with diabetes, was remembered not only for his role in the 1986 liberation war but also for his later political activism, which saw him align with Dr. Kizza Besigye under the Reform Agenda.

His widow, Rushenyi County MP Naome Kabasharira, described him as a principled man who loved politics and valued family. She thanked President Museveni for supporting Kazoora during his health struggles and for extending condolences and financial support to the family following his death.

“Even after their political fallout, the President stood with us during difficult times, and for that, we are grateful,” Kabasharira said.

The West Ankole Diocese Bishop, Rt. Rev. Johnson Twinomujuni, praised Kabasharira for her strength and dedication to family unity.

The burial drew a large crowd, including opposition leaders like NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), ANT President Gen. Mugisha Muntu, clergy from multiple dioceses, ministers, and members of parliament.
Maj. Kazoora is survived by his widow and four children. His legacy lives on through his military and political contributions, including his published book “Betrayed by Leader,” in which he expressed disillusionment with Museveni’s leadership.
