Live ammunitions have been fired by security operatives in Mbarara to disperse a group of individuals believed to have been hired by tycoon Hassan Basajjabalaba to clear part of the forest reserve.

The UPDF and state house operatives on sunday night launched an operation to block an alleged attempt by businessman Hassan Basajabalaba to grabland belonging to National forestry authority at Kamukuzi hill in Mbarara city.

The area, according to sources is linked to ongoing expansion of Kampala international University (KIU) heart institute that is under construction in Rwebikoona town.

Didas Tabaro the Mbarara district chairman clarified that the land in question is under the jurisdiction of the National Forestry Authority, not Mbarara District.

“I want to clarify that the land in question does not fall under the jurisdiction of Mbarara District. It is actually under the management of the National Forestry Authority. This distinction is important because it means the district has no authority to allocate or title that land.”Tabaro said

He expressed concern over how a land title was obtained by a private individual, who then allegedly sold the public land to tycoon Hassan Basajabalaba.

Tabaro added that he had instructed the district staff surveyor to retrieve the land file and investigate how the title was obtained.

Herbert Kamugisha, the Mbarara District NRM Chairman, questioned why a private individual would attempt to take over public land and urged state house to intervene and launch an investigation into the matter.

Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson SP Samson Kasasira confirmed the incident but said investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
