Police in Rukungiri District are investigating the circumstances under which three people lost their lives and several others including Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers sustained injuries in a road accident that occurred at Omukabingo Cell, Buyanja Sub-County, along the Rukungiri–Ntungamo Road.
The deceased have been identified as Ronald, commonly known as Kakimpa, a 35-year-old taxi conductor; Liberty Bonance a 3-year-old Congolese boy; and an unidentified female passenger who was traveling in the taxi.
According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, the accident occurred on the night of Saturday when a bus collided with a taxi, leaving 19 people injured. Among the injured are several UPDF personnel: Capt. Musinguzi Bright, RA/141725 S/SGT. Kwesigwa Edgar, RA/161230 L/CPL. Tukwasibwe Alex, and RA/213765 PTE Okello Francis. Other injured individuals include Pacific Claude, a Congolese national, along with other passengers who are currently receiving treatment at Nyakibale Hospital.
Maate said preliminary investigations indicate that the bus, registration number UBN 331N, was traveling from Rukungiri toward Ntungamo when it veered off its lane and collided with a Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UBA 341G.
The impact caused the bus to overturn onto the driver’s side and come to rest in the middle of the road, while the taxi spun around and ended up facing the opposite direction. Two passengers from the taxi and one from the bus died on the spot.
Police were promptly alerted and responded to the scene, which was visited by a team led by District Police Commander (DPC) SSP Kyangungu Apollo. A sketch plan of the scene was drawn, and relevant witness statements were recorded.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Rwakabengo Health Centre mortuary for postmortem examinations. Both vehicles involved in the crash have been impounded and are awaiting inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).
According to the police report, the accident was a result of reckless driving on the part of the bus driver.
