Full scale Hearing of an election petition filed by Hon. Micheal Mawanda Maranga to nullify the victory of the MP for Igara East Andrew Paul Martial kicked off on Wednesday 15th.June.2016 at Mbarara High Court.
Mawanda presented 31 witnesses to court and asked Andrew Martial’s lawyers led by Milton Mwebembezi to choose among the 31 the ones to cross examine. And because the court room is too small, when justice Dr. Winfred Nabisinde asked Mawanda’s witnesses to stand, they filled the court room. Cross-examination of witnesses started on Wednesday and will continue today.
On Wednesday 15th.2016 Mawanda’s lead council Frank Kandiho told court that he was tired of Andrew Martial’s lawyers presenting new avidaffits every court sitting because whenever court sits Andrew Martial’s lawyers together with electoral commission come with new avidaffits.
According to court records 24 witnesses had testified by yesterday and court continues today June 17, 2016.
The chief justice Bart Katureebe told www.mknewslink.com editor in March 2016 that he gave only two months to all the election petitions all over the country to have been concluded and they started in May 2016. Election petitions begin in High court and end in court of appeal according to Uganda’s laws.
There are eight election petitions in Ankole sub-region that were filed at Mbarara High court in which seven are for members of Parliament and the 8th is for Paul Kahiigi Turyamureeba against Jafari Bassajabalaba for Bushenyi district chairmanship.
