In Fort Portal—

The High Court in Fort Portal has again nullified the election of Mr. Lawrence Akugizibwe as the Member of Parliament for Mwenge North constituency in Kyenjojo district this afternoon.

The ruling was based on a petition filed by his opponent Mr. David Muhumuza, who was an independent candidate in the previous elections demanding the nullification on grounds of intimidation and ballot stuffing.

Akugizibwe who was stood on ticket of National Resistance Movement ended up winning the vote with total number of 19,144 defeating Mr. Muhumuuza who obtained 18,426.
Looking into the matter, Justice Henrietta Walayo ruled yesterday afternoon that court was contented with the evidence that was produced by Muhumuza acknowledging that the Electoral Commission failed to comply with electoral laws.

Muhuumuza compiled his evidence that the voting was characterized by ballot staffing and even bribing of voters at the voting time and this ended up leading to the dismissal of the petition with some costs.

Earlier this month, Justice Walayo dismissed another petition against Mwenge South MP, Aston Kajara.

Kajara’s opponent Mr. Vincent Mugisha went to court alleging that the elections were characterized by bribery plus intimidation of is supporters.
However, justice walayo ruled that the petitioner failed to adduce evidence of bribery.
