The Police in Rubanda district have confirmed the arrest and detention of Salim Joventa Ekyinaheirwe over allegations of killing her 50-year-old husband.
The body of Nurse Andrew Byomugabe was discovered by his son Hillary Akampumuza at their home in Ndego Trading Centre, Kashaasha Parish of Ikumba Sub-County.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson Elly Maate noted in a press statement this afternoon that the 35-year-old suspect, who has been on the run, was in the wee hours of Monday morning May 5, 2025 arrested in an intelligence-led operation, as she allegedly attempted to escape to neighbouring Kanungu district. He noted that Ekyinaheirwe was intercepted in Hamurwa following a tip-off from members of the public.
However, Maate dismissed social media reports that parts of the deceased’s body were missing, noting that a postmortem examination confirmed the body of Byomugabe was intact. He indicated that investigations are nearing completion, and that the suspect will be arraigned in court soon to face charges of murder.
The most recent Police data indicates that at least 12 people are murdered every day across the country.
