One person has been confirmed dead in Nyakabande Refugee settlement in an accident.

The deceased is a 61-year-old woman, Lydia Mbakemiye, a Congolese national residing in Kiwamgya, North Kivu Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to police reports, the incident occurred on April 21, 2025, at around noon within the Nyakabande Refugee Transit Centre compound in Kisoro Municipality when an Isuzu FVZ truck, registration number UAU 728X, belonging to UNHCR, hit the pedestrian.

It is alleged that the vehicle was en route from the UNHCR office in Kisoro town to the transit centre. Upon entering the gate, the driver stopped as the compound was filled with refugees undergoing screening and registration. A path was created for the truck to pass through, but as the driver resumed movement, a scuffle broke out among the refugees as they tried to rejoin the registration line. During the chaos, Lydia was pushed backwards, fell under the truck’s rear wheels, and was run over, dying instantly.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, informed journalists that the scene was documented and the body was taken to Kisoro Hospital mortuary for a postmortem. The truck has been impounded at Kisoro Central Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV)
