President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has condemned leaders who engage in sectarian politics by exploiting religious sentiments within their communities.
He issued this warning on Friday, February 14, 2025 while addressing a meeting of political leaders from the Kigezi Sub-region at Rukungiri Municipality playgrounds in Rukungiri District.
President Museveni emphasized that sectarian politics, particularly in the Kigezi region, has led to unnecessary divisions in the area based on religion.
“I am a cattle keeper and a farmer, but when I sell my cows, bananas, or other crops, I do not discriminate whether the buyer is Catholic or Anglican. My focus is on earning money, not religious affiliation,” Museveni explained.
He further quoted the Bible, saying, “Like the Bible tells us: Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. I am aware of divisions based on religion within Kigezi, and this must stop immediately.”
The President warned leaders to refrain from promoting sectarianism, which hinders development, and urged the public to report anyone attempting to sow divisions, especially in the region.
Museveni, who is on a tour of the Kigezi Sub-region to assess the implementation of the Parish Development Model (PDM), also encouraged local leaders to embrace the initiative. He highlighted PDM as a key strategy for helping households transition into the money economy.
The meeting was attended by political leaders from the six districts of Kigezi Sub-region: Kisoro, Rubanda, Kabale, Rukiga, Kanungu, and Rukungiri.
