The president said wetlands are crucial for for Agriculture, rainfall
formation and filtering water for human consumption and there for
protecting them is not an academic exercise or a hobby but its a
matter of life and death for human race.
The president said no human activity should be carried out within 50
meters from wetlands and 200 meters lake shores as well so as to
create a buffer zone that will filt stormy water hence control
siltation.
He was speaking during national celebrations to mark world environment
day at Kibubura Integrated primary school play grounds in Ibanda
district
This years Theme was ‘ Connect to nature, Appreciate biodiversity’
The president said since the country is going into serious Agriculture
wetlands must not be destroyed because they will provide water for
irrigation because rainfall alone is not enough.
The president further said wetlands need to be protected because they
inhabit various spices of birds, butterflies which attract tourists
adding that even forests contain some medicinal tress that can be
preserved for future use
