In Kabale—

Kabale-Kisoro road is once again in urgent need of repair after a sinkhole emerged, threatening the lives of road users.

The road connects Uganda to the Democratic Republic of Congo at Bunagana and Rwanda at Cyanika border.

In 2007, Government contracted an Israeli firm, Solel Boneh International (SBI) to upgrade the road and work was completed in 2012.

A year later in 2013 the road developed cracks between Heisesero and Muko Market, which were repaired.

In 2016, more cracks emerged between Mukyaahi and Ihanga trading centres in Bubaare Sub County; Karukara Market in Hamurwa town Council; Nyamasiizi in Hamurwa Sub County and Karengyere in Muko Sub County, all in Rubanda District.

Now, days ago, a big sinkhole appeared at Ihanga trading center, about 6 kilometers from Kabale.

James Kijana , a taxi driver says the current state of the road poses great danger to the road users.

Kijana says drivers avoid the bad section and compete for the remaining small section, which could lead to head-on collision.

Moses Wasiwasi , another road user says that because of cracks, some sections of the road have become very narrow making it hard for drivers to overtake, and offload goods.

Allan Sempebwa Kyobe the Uganda National Roads Authority Manager Media Relations, Public and Corporate Affairs says the authority is aware of the problem.

“Our maintenance team in Kabale is already handling the affected section and more technical investigations are ongoing to find a lasting solution,” Said Sempebwa.
