Residents Of Nyamitanga division were yesterday left stranded after Katete bridge that links Mbarara city To Nyamitanga (Katete Town ) in Mbarara city south collapsed.
This comes after Boda Boda riders and other road users have called upon city authorities to intervene and renovate the bridge before lives are lost but all in vain.
A refurbished Katete bridge was commissioned in 2018/19 though the costs have since been questionable.
Speaking to the city clerk, Theophilus Tibihika, the weak bridge railings and barriers were a month ago knocked by a reckless driver which led to its Collapse.
He stressed that the authorities are yet to arrest the driver adding that the council is aware and waiting for money to work on the bridge.
Kagiiko Imam Shafi, the LC IV councilor representing Katete ward in Nyamitanga accuses the authorities of concealing the Bills of Quantities (BOQ’s) and other information about the government projects.
He suspects that this could have been a tactic to embezzle government funds meant to rehabilitate the bridge.
