The Omukama of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom Dr. Solomon Iguru Gafabusa has observed that although the country is achieving progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS, there are still many things to do to eliminate the infection.
Gafabusa therefore urges stakeholders in Bunyoro to increase their efforts in fighting against the scourge adding that Bunyoro region is one of the most vulnerable areas in the country.
In his speech read by the kingdom Prime Minister, Norman Lukumu, during an annual review stakeholders meeting on Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission-PMTCT at the kingdom Rukurato Hall in Hoima town last evening, the Omukama has challenged stakeholders to mobilize the public to embrace the voluntary testing and counseling to know the sero status and if positive, enroll early on treatment.
He further challenged pregnant women to visit health centers for antenatal and HIV testing as one way protecting their new born babies from being infected with the virus.
Denis Bagumiza the project Coordinator Reproductive Health Uganda said that HIV/AIDS prevalence in Hoima is at 7.8% compared to the national rate that stands at 7.3%.
He says that virus is high among the young people and called on the leaders to double their effort in fight against the scourge.
