The minister of state for water and environment Beatrace Anywar has revealed that by 2040, the wetlands in Uganda shall have reduced to 1.6%.
Anywar noted that the wetlands coverage which is estimated to be currently reducing at annual rate of 2 2.5% was at 15.5 % in1994 then declined to 8.9% in 2016.
The minister was speaking at the World Wetlands day celebrations held at Bumbaire sub county grounds in Bushenyi District yesterday under the theme “Wetlands and Biodiversity”.
The Chairman Bushenyi District Jaffari Bassajabala sadly revealed that sub sectors such as forestry, land and planning which would have helped to conserve the environment have no funding from the central government.
He however added that as the district they have tried to instruct a tree planting project to protect and conserve wetlands in addition to demarcating 60km way from Nyaruzinga wetland.
Jaffarri warned that the available water sources in the district will not support its developmental needs within the next 20 years, adding that this is likely to create conflicts with neighboring districts over water.
Products manufactured from Wetlands of Nyaruzinga that included pots, mats and others were toured by the chief guest, Minister Beatrace Anya, alongside Minister Mary Karooro Okurut among others.
